The hum of a projector, the scent of popcorn, the hush of an expectant audience – for many, it’s a fleeting experience. For Devesh Dutt, Director of Liberty Pictures, it was the symphony of a lifelong dream. His journey from a wide-eyed cinephile to a cinematic powerhouse is not just a tale of success, but a captivating narrative woven with passion, perseverance, and a touch of the extraordinary.

The Echo of the Unseen

“My great-grandfather founded 'Liberty Pictures', a Film Distribution Company, where both my grandfather and father started their careers. Later, my father transitioned from the film distribution business into advertising.”

“My childhood passion for filmmaking led me to study Film Making & Animation at The Art Institute of Los Angeles. However, due to my father's health complications, I joined his advertising agency after college, putting my dream on hold to focus on building a career and additional ventures.”

“In 2013, I decided to rekindle my filmmaking dream. I revived the name Liberty Pictures, transforming it from a distribution firm into a production house. Today, we specialize in creating engaging content that helps brands and OTT platforms capture wider audiences with our creative approach.”

Picture this: A young Devesh, not in the plush seats of a multiplex, but amidst the dusty reels and flickering lights of a small, local film society. This was his initial film school, a place where he devoured classics and indie gems alike, dissecting narratives and admiring the magic spun on screen. While his peers were dreaming of mainstream blockbusters, Devesh was drawn to the raw, unfiltered power of storytelling, the kind that resonates long after the credits roll.

His early forays into filmmaking weren't glamorous. They were a testament to his grit: shoestring budgets, borrowed equipment, and countless sleepless nights fueled by instant coffee and an unshakeable belief in his vision. He experimented with short films, documentaries, and even music videos, each project a stepping stone, a lesson learned, a refinement of his craft. He faced rejections, setbacks, and the daunting whispers of doubt that plague every aspiring artist. But for Devesh, these were not roadblocks; they were plot twists in his own evolving story.

The turning point, as stories often have, came unexpectedly. It wasn't a sudden burst of fame, but a slow, steady recognition of his unique voice.

“My childhood dream of becoming a filmmaker is now a reality. I am committed to continue creating wonderful stories, with the ultimate goal of producing feature films on a larger scale.”

The Visionary's Gambit

With the establishment of Liberty Pictures, Devesh Dutt wasn't just building a production house; he was forging a sanctuary for authentic storytelling. His philosophy was simple: empower creators, champion diverse narratives, and never compromise on artistic integrity. He surrounded himself with a team that shared his vision, fostering an environment where innovation thrived and creativity knew no bounds.

“Businesses must evolve as humans do. Change is constant; quick adaptation ensures survival.”

“A compelling story and a director's clear vision are the bedrock of a successful film. While elements such as cast, crew, locations, budget, and execution can enhance the final product, they are unlikely to salvage a weak narrative or a poorly conceived vision. This principle extends to business as well. The core idea and meticulous planning are paramount for success. Intelligence and diligence are key; while luck can play a role, consistent effort and perseverance often determine the outcome.”

One might imagine the life of a successful film director to be a whirlwind of red carpets and lavish parties. While Devesh certainly experiences the fruits of his labor, his true joy remains in the creative process. He's often found on set, not barking orders, but collaborating, encouraging, and meticulously crafting each frame. He delves into scripts with the fervor of a detective, unearthing hidden layers and subtle nuances. His commitment to his craft is unwavering, almost monastic.

“Filmmaking is a fusion of creativity and business. Our 12-year journey in filmmaking has been a constant learning experience, fusing creativity with business. We've embraced new skills and technologies, but the most rewarding moments come from audience appreciation—hearing applause at film festivals or receiving "flawless" feedback from clients. Our path was validated early on, in our first year, when we were honored with the "Best Emerging Film Production House Of India" award.”

Devesh Dutt's success isn't merely measured in box office numbers or awards – though he has certainly garnered his share. It’s in the impact his films have on society, the conversations they spark, and the aspiring filmmakers he inspires. He stands as a testament to the idea that true success isn’t about conforming to trends, but about forging your own path, however unconventional it may seem.

"Creativity transcends language barriers, allowing us to work with a global clientele, including those from France and Germany. Our content has reached North American and European markets, and our films have garnered over 30 accolades, representing and winning awards in more than 10 countries worldwide."

When creativity is at war with competition

Devesh has always seen himself as an artist first.

“We don't work with a competition mindset as we are creating art. If we have to compete, then it is with ourselves, to constantly improve our work. The global experience we have, along with our passion is what we consider our advantage to do quality work. That is a strong barometer for clients to choose us to create content for them.”

As the story unraveled, several questions were posed to Devesh -

Could you tell us more about your team?

At Liberty Pictures, our core team includes myself, focusing on writing, direction, and business. My sister, Bindiya, provides strong support on various creative fronts. Lalit, our cinematographer and all-rounder, has been with us since the beginning. Following the pandemic, the rest of our team operates on a project-by-project freelance basis, which is standard practice in the film industry.

## Technology Stack

Our in-house equipment includes a camera and GoPro, complemented by a Mac editing setup, lights, sound recording instruments, and various mounts and rigs. We utilize industry-standard software such as Final Draft, FCP, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Photoshop. Additional equipment is rented as needed, a common practice in the industry.

In the coming years, how do you intend to market your product and what are your customer acquisition strategies? Additionally, could you elaborate on the revenue model of 'Liberty Pictures'?

We operate a dual-faceted business: crafting AD Films & Corporate Films for clients, and producing original fiction content (films, series) for sale/licensing to global OTT platforms and channels. Our core objective is to deliver high-quality content at competitive prices.

We have a pipeline of scripts slated for theatrical and OTT release, and we are actively seeking like-minded co-producers who share our vision.

Navigating the entrepreneurial landscape often presents considerable challenges. Could you recount a time when you encountered a substantial setback, detailing not just your recovery, but also how you ultimately flourished as a result?

Growth often emerges from setbacks, a truth exemplified by our experience. We were poised to begin production on our feature film when the COVID-19 pandemic brought everything to a halt. However, an unexpected silver lining appeared in the form of our 2019 short film, 'The Virus.' Initially created to highlight a social issue, the film was already navigating the film festival circuit when the pandemic struck. Post-COVID, its relevance surged, transforming it into a mainstream success. 'The Virus' was subsequently acquired by platforms such as Disney+ Hotstar, Hungama Digital, and ShortsTv, and garnered 20 accolades on the film festival circuit.

What kind of support and feedback are you seeking from the target audience or the product/service community?

In today's digital landscape, mobile-generated content and short-form videos like "reels" are prevalent for personal and professional branding. However, for sustained brand enhancement, engaging a professional production house is crucial. The current emphasis on maximizing views as a measure of success is
misplaced. True success lies in creating content that genuinely resonates with viewers and elevates the brand. This long-term marketing success requires businesses to trust professionals for content creation. Similarly, in the world of Cinema and OTT, audiences should prioritize supporting filmmakers with compelling stories over consuming low-quality content solely for star power.

What does receiving the award of 'I Believe Conclave & Awards' recognition mean to you, and how did it validate your journey so far?

Awards hold a unique significance, serving as a powerful affirmation of one's dedication and a compass guiding one's journey toward success. The I Believe Conclave and Award, in particular, was a deeply meaningful experience. Its specialness was amplified by the fact that it took place in my hometown, allowing me to share the celebration of this achievement with my beloved family and friends.

India is a dynamic and evolving market. What's one unique challenge you've faced or overcome specifically within the Indian business landscape that might not be as prevalent elsewhere?

The Indian market presents a landscape of extremes. Brands and studios typically opt for either established production houses and celebrities, incurring significant costs, or they seek the most economical options available. The mid-segment poses the greatest challenge, requiring time, patience, and a combination of smart and hard work to navigate.

If not in your current profession/business, what would you be doing differently?

I enjoy imagining different versions of myself, hence I love hypothetical questions. I would have loved to be a musician (guitarist or drummer and lead singer), have a band, and travel & perform globally. If I had to play it safe, I'd choose Real Estate, as I like it and know how to profit from it. However, true happiness comes from following one's passion, succeeding, and turning it into a profitable business, which is what I'm striving for.

So, the next time you settle into your seat, the lights dimming and the screen coming alive, remember the story of Devesh Dutt. Remember the young dreamer who saw beyond the spectacle, who believed in the power of a well-told story, and who, with unwavering dedication, turned his indie dreams into celluloid triumphs, forever redefining what it means to create truly free and impactful cinema. His journey is an ongoing saga, and the best, we suspect, is yet to come from Liberty Pictures.
