Contemporary Cheerharan: Women Fighting Indignity and Injustice

September 6, 2025
Contemporary Cheerharan: Women Fighting Indignity and Injustice is an anthology co-authored by Maitridevi Sisodia. The book, which won Sisodia the Ukiyoto Woman Writer of the Year award, is a powerful exploration of the various injustices and indignities faced by women in society.
The title is a modern take on "Cheerharan," the infamous episode from the epic Mahabharata where Draupadi's sari (cheer) was disrobed in public, symbolizing a woman's public humiliation and loss of dignity. The book argues that this "cheerharan" continues in contemporary society through various forms of indignity and injustice.
Key Points and Thematic Breakdown
The book is a collection of different literary forms, including poems, essays, short stories, diary entries, epigrams, and open letters. This varied approach allows the authors to tackle a wide range of issues from different angles and perspectives, making the work both deeply personal and universally relatable.
1. Societal Indignities and Injustices
The central theme is the widespread discrimination and harassment women face. The book sheds light on issues like dowry, domestic violence, acid attacks, forced prostitution, and rape. It serves as a "clarion call" to address these systemic problems and challenges the societal culture that wrongs and blames women. The book's content is partly based on the authors' personal experiences and observations, lending it an emotional and authentic feel.
2. A Modern Draupadi
The book uses the mythological figure of Draupadi as a powerful metaphor for the modern woman. Just as Draupadi was humiliated in a public assembly, the book highlights how women today face similar public and private indignities. It challenges the traditional portrayal of women as silent, sacrificial figures and instead presents them as powerful individuals who are capable of fighting for their rights and dignity.
3. The Power of Art and Literature
Instead of just presenting straightforward facts or narratives, the authors use art and literature as a medium to express their anger and frustration. They believe that poetry, stories, and essays can reveal a reality that is often "sugar-coated." The book's use of diverse literary forms is a deliberate choice to ensure that the message resonates with readers on a deeper, more emotional level.
4. A Call for Change
The book is not just a documentation of problems; it is a call to action. It urges society to reflect on its behavior and work towards creating a more just and equitable world. It emphasizes that a society can only truly flourish when it is fair to everyone, regardless of gender. The authors hope to provoke thought and spark conversations around social justice and dignity.
